Keith Butler Returns To Winners Circle
By Curtis Whalin

Keith Butler and Amanda Furgeson get set to take the green flag

The Checkered Flag Sprint Series (CFSS) were at Charlotte County Motorsports Park on Saturday October 11 for a 30 lap feature race.

The first heat was won by David Slawiak in the 79 car who started on the pole after the 78 car driven by Mickey Kempgens opted to start from the rear as he was experiencing some problem with the car. Amanda Ferguson in the 21A had the pole for the start of the second heat and held onto the lead for the first three laps of the race.

In what may have been the move of the night, Keith Butler, who was running in third place, made a move coming out of turn four and threaded the needle between the first and second place cars to take the lead and go on to win the heat.

Amanda Ferguson had the pole again for the start of the feature race and again she got away clean to take the early lead. The first caution of the race came early on lap 3 when several cars made contact at turn two, leaving the 79DD driven by Dakotah Stephens needing to be towed off the track and sending 79 driven by David Slawiak into the pits for a tire change. The 79 made it back out before the race got back underway but it was the end of the night for the 79DD.

The race got back to green with the 21A still in the lead but the pack now right on her tail. Just one lap later on lap 4, Keith Butler who had started from 7th position, took the race lead and started to pull away from the field. On lap 13, something broke on the 21 car driven by Dustin Perez, with the car leaving a trail of sparks before running up against the wall on the back straightaway where it came to a stop.

The car was leaking fuel so the red flag was thrown to preserve the fuel in the remaining cars during the time that it took to clean up the accident scene and the fuel spill. Keith Butler led the field for the restart as the field passed by the restart cone to begin the final leg of the race. Butler proved to be unbeatable, winning the feature race, the Barfield’s Clean Sweep and the Real Racin’ USA Hard Charger Award.

Another reminder that Keith Butler and the sponsors of his car, the 19 car that has been named “The Patriot”, have started an initiative called “Race for Freedom” to collect supplies and donations for the troops overseas. Fans coming to the track can donate money or bring supplies (razors, deodorant, shampoo, baby wipes, etc) and drop them off at the track entrance.

Any cash donations will be used to buy additional supplies and pay for the mailing costs. So far the Butlers have sent over 250 pounds of supplies to troops overseas thanks in a large part to the generosity of the CCMP racers and fans. The donation boxes will be available at the next CFSS race for anyone that would like to contribute. If you can’t make it to a race but still want to contribute or would like more information, you can contact Keith or Jennifer at kjmotorsports@aol.com.

CFSS will be back at Charlotte County Motorsports Park on November 1st for their Halloween race the drivers will bring the candy and all you need tto bring is your costume! Thanks to the fans and the racers for their ongoing support.

The 4th of July race went off with a ‘big bang’ thanks in part to fire works provided by the McDole/Slawiak team. Our biggest car count of the year was on hand to entertain the crowd.

The 35 lap feature, sponsored by J. B. Banta Enterprises, was a hard fought battle for positions one through eighteen, putting on a great show for the fans.

Keith Butler was the winner and recipient of the $500.00 Barfield Clean Sweep award for winning the heat and feature events. David Slawiak ...
